Wayne Kelly Porter

April 27, 1948 — November 8, 2022

Wayne Kelly Porter, a 19- year resident of April Sound, entered into heaven on Nov. 8, 2022, after suffering a head injury and resulting heart complications.

Wayne was born and grew up as an only child in the small South Texas town of San Benito, where he met his future wife Almina ("Mina") Doan. Although they had mutual friends, Wayne and Mina did not meet until their senior year. Both then attended Texas A&I University, now Texas A&M University-Kingsville. They married in 1968 and graduated in 1971, Wayne with a Bachelor of Business Administration-Accounting and Mina with a Bachelor of Science-Secondary Education. They then began their professional careers, Wayne as an accountant and Mina as a teacher. They moved to Houston in 1974 with their two young children.

Wayne had a 51-year career as an accountant, working first at Stewart and Stevenson Oiltools, then spending 30 plus years at Henshaw, Langley, & Associates. Wayne tolerated a year in retirement before joining James DiFrancesco & Associates for three years, a time he enjoyed immensely.

Wayne was preceded in death by his father, James Herman Porter, and his mother, Emma Ratliff Porter, of San Benito. His father's family was originally from the Goldsboro, North Carolina, area. His mother's Ratliff family and ancestors were early settlers in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas. His grandfather Franklin Ratliff was an early developer of the San Benito area, where a street is named after him.

Wayne is survived by his wife of 54 years, Almina Doan Porter (“Mina”); his son, Michael Wayne Porter of Montgomery, TX; and his daughter, Kelli Dianne Porter of Whittier, CA. His last seven years were brightened by the mutual devotion between Wayne and his six-pound best friend and “grand doggie” JJ. It was love at first sight between Wayne and JJ, who had been abandoned under a car and then saved by Wayne’s daughter Kelli.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Wayne’s name can be made to the American Diabetes Association, The American Heart Association, or a local animal rescue organization of your choice.

A private family service will be held at a later date.
