Velma Jean North

December 24, 1932 — November 21, 2025

Cypress

Velma “Jean” North, lovingly known as “Grams” to her family and Jean to her friends, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2025, in Cypress, Texas, surrounded by loved ones. She was 92 years old. Born Ulmagene Reba Atkinson on December 24, 1932, in Trinity, Texas, she was the daughter of Ernest Atkinson and Sallie Naomi Andrews.

Jean was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Nicholas “Nick” Nastos. She is survived by her children—Sia, Aloha, Spike, Jared, Mat, and little Jared—as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who carry her spark forward. Though small in stature, she was mighty in spirit: strong, stubborn, resilient, and unapologetically herself.

Her life was colored by adventure, music, chocolate, and outrageous stories that could light up a room—or occasionally clear it out. She had a sharp wit, an iron will, and a boundless heart, and she raised generations of bold, outspoken women and men who carry forward her courage and fire.

Graveside services will be held Friday, November 28, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Clapp Cemetery at 304 Piney Woods Rd, Trinity, Texas 75862. Family is invited to gather to honor a woman who was never simple, never quiet, never boring—and who will never be forgotten.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held in the coming weeks, and all who knew and loved her are welcome to attend.
