Thomas Edward Byer

Sep 4, 1943 — Sep 9, 2026

Conroe

Thomas was born in Marlin, Texas, on September 4, 1943, to Fritz Charlie and Minnie Lee (Pomykal) Byer. He died on September 9, 2026, in Conroe, Texas. Thomas was a graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University, where he played running back for the Lumberjack football team. He dedicated his life to a career in coaching and education. Over a 30-year career, his coaching stops included C.E. King High School, Huffman High School, and York Jr. High in CISD. While coaching, he earned the nickname “Legs” because of the excellent athletic condition he maintained.

In between coaching gigs, Thomas had the opportunity to travel overseas while working for Brown & Root. This adventure landed him in Bahrain for 10 years, where he met the love of his life, Wendy. They shared a loving marriage for just over 50 years. Thomas instilled a strong work ethic in his children and was always ready and willing to help anyone when called upon. He was an extraordinary husband, father, and grandfather, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, John Byer, Fritz C. Byer Jr., Lester Byer, and Sam Byer; and his sisters, Mary Frances (Byer) Bandy and Lillian (Byer) Thompson.

Thomas is survived by his wife of 50 years, Wendy Byer; his sons, Michael (wife Jennifer) and Dax (wife Rhonda); his daughter, Kelli Byer; and his grandchildren, Carly (husband Seth), Candice, and Kolby. He is also survived by his sister, Ollie (Byer) Stubbs, and numerous nieces and nephews.
