Milbra Dolores Walters Mathias, born on January 16, 1923 in Ace, Texas, passed away on January 3, 2019 in Conroe, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Mathias; son, Harmon Darrell Sherwood; parents, John and Mamie Walters; sisters, Esther Hann, Jewell Powell, Doris Laverne Doby, Mary Geneva Wrenn; and brother, Harmon Walters. She is survived by nieces, Patsy Jackson, Betty Vanya and Charlotte Henner; nephew, Harold Steagall; and great nephews, Larence Jackson and Lynn Stegall. She is also survived by her extended family: daughter-in-law, Joan Mathias; granddaughters, Nicole Panneton and her husband Mark and Renee Mathias; and great grandchildren, Cooper and Ava.
Dolores was a longtime member of Montgomery United Methodist Church and VFW Auxiliary #4709. Dolores spent her employment years in the banking business and she and Richard operated a successful dry cleaning business in Houston before retiring to Montgomery, Texas.
Dolores’ retirement years were spent in volunteer service. She enjoyed being around people and felt great satisfaction in helping others. She served in the Volunteer Auxiliary of Conroe Regional Hospital for several years, but the most dedicated and fulfilling years were spent as a Veterans Administration Volunteer at the Conroe VA Clinic, where she put in over 9,500 hours. She was recognized for her volunteer service with the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award. She was very proud of her work with veterans, and she will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held at 10 am on Friday, January 18, 2019 at Montgomery United Methodist Church, 22548 Hwy 105 W, Montgomery, Texas 77356. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Montgomery Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 22548 Hwy 105W, 77356, the VFW Auxiliary #4709, P.O. Box 1807, Conroe 77305 or to the charity of your choice. Interment will be in the family plot at Menard Chapel Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
