Lorene Kelly Houghton, 83, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2025. She was a devoted and cherished wife, mother, stepmother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, cookie-buddy, and friend.
She was also a paragon of humanity; Lorene’s kindness and joy never failed to brighten the days and lives of those around her. While dementia impeded her relationship with her family, she never lost her bright smile when they visited her, nor did she forget her love for chocolate chip cookies.
Lorene was born in Mission, Texas, the second of three children. She worked as a dental assistant and dental office manager, restaurant owner, electrologist, and, in retirement, volunteered at a dental clinic with her husband, Richard.
She loved reading, being a member of her photography club, delving into family history, and traveling the world with Richard. She found joy in sharing her knowledge with her grandchildren, completing jigsaw puzzles, and spending time with her family.
A brief graveside ceremony will take place on Monday, November 24, at 10:45 a.m. at the Houston National Cemetery, located at 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX. Family and friends of Lorene should meet in Lane 2 at 10:30 a.m. by the front office to be escorted to the designated pavilion.
There will be a Celebration of Life held at 1:00 p.m. following the graveside ceremony on Monday, November 24. Please join Lorene’s loved ones to share your favorite stories of her, have lunch, and, of course, chocolate chip cookies. Contact family for more information.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations in Lorene’s memory to the Interfaith Community Clinic where she and Richard volunteered - https://givebutter.com/KeepingNeighborsHealthy
