After an impactful and well lived life, Lawrence Edward (Ed) Pennington, Jr passed peacefully into the arms of Christ at home with family on July 12, 2025. A memorial service will be held on July 31 at 2pm in The Robb Chapel of The Woodlands United Methodist Church with a reception to follow.
Ed was born in San Antonio, Texas on June 20, 1953, where he began his early journey around the world. With a father who served in the United States Air Force, Ed cherished their frequent moves as an opportunity to meet new friends. He lived in ten places during the first eighteen years of his life and enjoyed reminiscing about adventures in Germany, Nebraska, Utah and Puerto Rico. He eventually settled down to attend and play golf for Texas A&M University. It was in College Station where he cemented two of his great loves – Texas A&M and his wife, Debbie Randall. He met Debbie his freshman year of college. The two married in 1977 in All Faiths Chapel on the Texas A&M campus.
Ed was known for his thoughtful, insightful feedback and meticulous attention to detail. These qualities led him to an exemplary business career with many companies, culminating as the Vice President of Information Technology for Hewlett Packard. His work brought him long lasting and deeply treasured friendships.
All who knew Ed would describe him as an avid golfer. He began playing as a child and continued to engage in golf for the remainder of his life. He was a proud member of the Texas A&M Golf team in college and continued playing in and winning several amateur tournaments over the rest of his life. When his playing days were over Ed found great joy in volunteering with the Houston Golf Association and the First Tee program.
Above all, Ed was dedicated to his family. He loved his family deeply and this showed in his daily life, as well as in the legacy that he leaves behind. Ed and Debbie raised two children, Alyson and Marcus, with values of faith, integrity, and love. Ed would move mountains for his family. This legacy of family values lives on through his five grandchildren, who were very much loved by their grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Colonel Lawrence Edward and Elizabeth (Betsy) Ann Pennington.
He will be deeply missed by his wife of 48 years, Debbie; his children, Dr. Alyson Vokes and Marcus Pennington; their spouses, Dr. Colin Vokes and Morgan Pennington; his two sisters, Margaret Ann Wise and Lori Elizabeth Mathis, and all his family and friends. We know that his life lessons and legacy will be carried forward by his five beloved grandchildren Matthew (8), Alex (7), Parker (6), Taylor (5), and Hunter (2).
Honorary pallbearers are Marcus Pennington, Dr. Colin Vokes, Matthew Vokes, Cullen (Stormy) Reeves, and Dr. David Reidel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts or memorials be directed to the First Tee of Greater Houston.
