Joyce Marie Hubbard

Joyce Marie Hubbard, age 71, passed away on Thursday, December 19, 2013. A native Houstonian, she was born on October 29, 1942. As a young girl, she took piano lessons from age 6 to age 14 and enjoyed playing throughout her life. Her mother fondly remembers her playing a Pilgrim girl in her 4th grade school play. She attended Cottage Grove Elementary and Spring Branch Jr and Sr schools, where she was a member of the Bruin Brigade Drill Team serving as a Captain. Also, she was honored to be Homecoming Queen, and was voted most beautiful by her class. She started working as a receptionist at Spring Branch Hospital at age 15. She took classes at TCU and SMU before making a career in real estate as a broker for almost 15 years. In her retirement she took up painting and won 1st place in her first contest among the students. Joyce was a longtime member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her father, Edward John Sustala, and her son, Lloyd Samuel Downing Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Jessica Evans and husband Rush, and her son, Jeffrey Thomas and wife Stacy. She adored her grandchildren, Colton Caffey, Teylor Thomas, Carlin Evans, Callie Evans, Hope Thomas, Cole Spears and Chase Spears. She enjoyed spending time with them hosting slumber parties, baking and doing crafts. She is also survived by her mother, Addie Sustala; siblings, Edward Sustala and wife Lynn, Dennis Sustala and wife Julie; and her aunt, Ora Lee Bowerman.
