Joe Viser

Joe Viser, a Madisonville, Texas-born theater actor and director, died on August 4, 2026 at his home in Shenandoah, Texas. He was 90 years old.

Joe began his acting career at the University of Houston in 1955, where he appeared in 20 stage performances. He went on to study and work at Houston’s renowned Alley Theatre, deepening his craft and passion for the stage. Over the decades, he directed productions at Playhouse 1960, Houston’s Country Playhouse black box theatre, and Montgomery College, earning a reputation as a dedicated and versatile theater artist.

In 1972, Joe joined the then-Crighton Players at the group’s founding, beginning a 52-year association with what would become The Players Theatre Company in Conroe. The company itself originated in 1967 as The Little Theatre of Conroe, producing shows on the Conroe High School stage and later in a former plumbing supply store at the corner of Galveston and Robertson streets. Joe assisted with the group in a variety of roles throughout its growth and evolution and directed the Crighton Theatre’s first production, “The Last Meeting of the Knights of the White Magnolia.”

In 2008, when the Owen Theatre opened with The Players as the resident theater group, Joe took on the role of artistic director. He directed “Wait Until Dark” as the company’s first production in the new space, a milestone that marked the beginning of a new chapter for the organization.

He served as artistic director until his retirement in March 2024. “It is through Joe’s commitment, passion and sincere love for this organization that we have been able to create a place for all artists and community members to come and experience the joy of live theatre,” said Adam Isbell, president of The Players board of directors, when asked about Joe’s retirement in 2024. “Its ongoing growth and vibrance will be his legacy.”

Beyond the stage, Joe enjoyed reading, writing, poetry, and sports of all kinds. He will be remembered as being kind, intellectually curious, passionate about the arts, and beloved by his family and community.

Joe is survived by his wife of 68 years, Susan Viser, his children Victor (Sandra), Tracy (Tammy), Jill, and Jeremy, grandchildren Victoria (Jason), Victor (Melody), Alexandra, and Cassidy, and generations of families.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gayle and Elsie Viser, and his siblings, Ruby, Ida Lee, and George Viser.
