Jesse Herbert Slavens, 89 of Montgomery, TX, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on November 20, 2022. He was born on June 19, 1933 in Springfield, Missouri to Homer and Eva Slavens. He graduated from Senior High in Springfield and joined the U.S. Marines where he served for three years. He married Laura Ross in July of 1953. They were each other’s lifelong companions and friends. They were blessed with three children: Rex, Gene, and Joyce. Herb worked in the masonry industry his entire life and served on the board of the American Subcontractors Association as well as the United Masonry Contractors Association. He was featured as Industry Leader of the Year in the Masonry Construction magazine in July 2002. He worked for Dee Brown, Inc for over 42 years, retiring as Executive Vice President of Estimating and Marketing in 1998 at the age of 65. He also taught the Union Apprenticeship school at Skyline High School. His career didn’t stop there as he consulted for several Dallas masonry companies after his retirement for more than a decade. He also stayed active in the masonry school he founded at Northlake College in 2000. Outside of work, you could find Herb playing golf, fishing, or maintaining his 50+ acre farm in Royse City. Herb and Laura sold their farm and moved closer to family in Montgomery, TX, in 2016. He attended Fellowship of Montgomery church. Herb is survived by his wife of 69 years, Laura Slavens; son Rex Slavens and wife, Susan, of Montgomery; son Gene Slavens of Montgomery; daughter Joyce Fletcher and husband, Jason, of Rockwall; 7 grandchildren, 1 great grandson, many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, brother and sister in laws, and infant grandson, Nathan Gerald Slavens. Herb will be remembered for his dedication to the masonry industry, to his family, for his infectious laugh, and his willingness to help others. “You know what I mean?”

A come and go Celebration of Life/Memorial Luncheon for Herb Slavens will be held at the Sonoma Verde Amenity Center at 1506 Bertino Way, Rockwall, TX 75032 on Saturday, May 6th from 1-4pm. All that knew and loved Herb are invited to attend.
