Jan Martin Steen

June 30, 1943 — March 23, 2024

Jan Martin Steen peacefully passed away, surrounded by family, at his home in Conroe, Texas, on March 23, 2024, after a valiant battle with cancer.

Jan was born in Kiel, Germany on June 30, 1943. He grew up swimming in the Baltic Sea, playing in bombed out WW2 bunkers, and pretending to be an “American cowboy”.

In 1963, at the age of 19, Jan immigrated to the United States, (Chicago, Illinois), where he began a lifelong career as a master tool and die maker. He had a true passion and talent for his work.
After meeting Susie, the love of his life, on a blind date, they married in 1968 and started a family a few years later.

When Jan got tired of shoveling the Chicago snow, he moved his family, in 1977 to a much warmer climate- Texas! He and Susie raised their family and lived in Round Rock until his retirement in 2009. Shortly after, they moved to Conroe to be closer to his beloved grandkids.

Some of Jan’s biggest passions were camping, hiking, nature, picture taking, and talking. (He never met a stranger!) But his greatest passion of all was his family. His wife, Susie, of 55 years, his two children, Natalie and Erik, his son and daughter in law, Peter and Angie, and all his beautiful grandchildren.

Jan is preceded in death by his mother, Dora Steen, father, Hermann Steen, and sister, Herma Strom.
He is survived by his wife, Susan Steen, daughter, Natalie Camps (Peter), son, Erik Steen (Angie), grandchildren, Gill Camps, Daytona Camps, Jordan Harred, Lucas Camps, Liam Camps, Kiely Steen, Brynn Steen, and Maddie Steen, his sister, Helga Kotremba, and several nephews and a niece.

Jan was a wonderful friend to all who knew him. He was an especially wonderful husband, dad and opa.
His positive spirit and love of life didn’t come to an end with his death. It will live on in his loved ones, who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest.

Friends are invited to a Celebration of Life honoring Jan. It will be held on *April 13, 2024, from 2-5pm at Citizens Grill (315 Enclave Drive, Conroe, Tx. 77384)
*April 13th is significant, as it always held a special place in Jan’s heart- It’s the exact day he immigrated to America 61 years ago!
