Heidi Burge Horton

Nov 12, 1971 — Oct 5, 2026

Heidi Burge Horton, of Houston, Texas, passed away on October 5, 2026, at the age of 54.

Heidi was born on November 12, 1971, in Harbor City, Ca. to the late Larry and Mary Burge. She is survived by her devoted husband, Patrick and their children, Jonathan and Holly; twin sister, Heather Quella, and husband Darren, their sons Joshua, Matthew, and Gregory. Heidi is further survived by her half-brothers, Stephen and Ray Burge; half-sister Janet Salsbury, and husband Stephen, and their daughter Emma; adopted sister, Rita Brohman, and husband Larry, their sons Matthew and Aaron; brother-in-law John Horton and wife Carole, as well as many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Heidi spent her early years in Redondo Beach, Ca. where she attended Coast Christian School. Later, her family moved up the hill to Palos Verdes, allowing Heidi and Heather to attend PV High School, where they proudly became Sea Kings. With some resistance, Heidi joined the basketball squad with her sister. As a duo, they dominated local teams and regional tournaments. Heidi graduated in 1989 and, along with her sister, earned a scholarship to attend the University of Virginia (UVA).

At UVA, Heidi excelled both academically and athletically. She earned degrees in Spanish and Rhetoric & Communications Studies in 1993. As a member of the UVA women's basketball team, led by future women's hall of fame coach Debbie Ryan and future hall of fame player and Olympian Dawn Staley, Heidi helped the Lady Cavaliers win three ACC titles and reach three NCAA Final Fours.

Following graduation, Heidi embarked on a remarkable four-year professional basketball career overseas, playing in France, Hungary, Italy, and Greece. More than simply competing on the court, she immersed herself in each culture, learning to communicate with the locals in their native languages, ultimately launching lifelong friendships.

In the late 1990s, Heidi fulfilled another dream by playing in the WNBA, spending two seasons with the LA Sparks and the Washington Mystics.

After retiring from professional basketball in 1999, Heidi made Houston home. She pursued sports commentary, later becoming a middle school Spanish teacher. In the early 2000s, she took over Hoops-School, a youth basketball program that would become one of her life's greatest passions.

Through Hoops-School, Heidi taught far more than basketball fundamentals. She mentored young athletes in life skills, character, leadership, and faith, encouraging them to live lives of purpose and pursue something greater than themselves. Countless young people benefited from her guidance, encouragement, and firm belief in their potential.

Heidi and Patrick were married in 2001 during a beautiful beach ceremony in Southern California. They soon began their family, welcoming Jonathan in 2003 and Holly in 2006. Being a wife and mother was among Heidi's greatest joys and proudest accomplishments.

Heidi loved traveling and spending time outdoors. Whether she was at the beach, in the mountains, beside a lake, or simply enjoying nature, she found joy in God's creation. She loved learning, leading, praying, reading her Bible, public speaking, cooking, volunteering, and connecting with neighbors and friends. If something was meaningful, brought joy, helped others, or glorified God's Kingdom, Heidi embraced it wholeheartedly.

Heidi lived a remarkable life of faith, service, adventure, and love. She was a light in her family, her community, and the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know her. Though that light is no longer with us physically, it continues to shine brightly through the countless people she inspired, encouraged, and loved.

Her legacy of faith, compassion, leadership, and generosity will endure for generations to come.
