Douglas Bays

Hurricane Doug died August 29, 2014 from complications resulting from a skiing accident. Doug was a remarkable young man who befriended everyone he ever met. Electronic dance music lives on, but no one will dance to it like Doug. Burning Man will continue, but the temple will never be as mystical as it was with Doug. UT football continues (well, sort of), but no one will ever show the extreme fanaticism that UTBays did. Doug attended school in The Woodlands and graduated from The Woodlands High School, then graduated with honors from the University of Texas in 2005, got a fellowship to the University of California at Berkeley, worked for GE Nuclear, was accepted into its management training program, then realized that he should enjoy life while he was young. So he did. He resigned his position at GE so that he could explore the world on his bicycle and did just that for 9 months. He rode his bicycle throughout South America, and, when he returned to the US, he rode along the US/Canadian border, eventually finding his way to Vail, Colorado. Doug lived more in his 31 years than most people live in a lifetime.

Doug leaves behind his Dad, Randy Bays, his Mom, Kwi Hui Bays Pearce, his beloved brother Scott Bays and sister Ashley Bays, his stepparents Kristin Bays and Mike Pearce, his Mimi Ok Sun Reach, his special Uncle Gary Bays and Aunt Susie Pulley, and his PawPaw, Granny, Grandma, Grandpa, Grandpatty and Gro (all grandparents, as if that wasn’t obvious), and 487,621 friends (Doug never met a stranger), including especially his dear friend Jessica Jensen as well as Jimmy Shuham and Donna Fabian who engaged in tireless efforts to keep Doug’s friends informed of his condition. Doug was also grateful for the care provided to him by his physician and friend, Matthew Harbison, and the entire nursing team at Memorial Hermann - TMC.

Douglas took great pride in being a part of the TIRR Texans wheelchair rugby team, and donations in his honor may be made to the Memorial Hermann Foundation, care of Elizabeth Bayless, 929 Gessner, Suite 2650, Houston, Texas 77024.
