Doloras C. Schmidt

November 8, 1922 — May 30, 2024

Doloras “Honey,” “Dee,” and to many, “Nana” Schmidt went to be with her heavenly Father on Thursday, May 30, 2024, having reached the age of 101-years-young. She passed at home with family around her. She was born November 8, 1922, in Milwaukee, WI to Henry and Alma Goehlen. Growing up in Wisconsin meant winter sports and she enjoyed and excelled at ice skating. Staying at the skating park until near dark led to another favorite sport, running, as she had to run 20 city blocks to get home on time. Her enjoyment of running lasted into her 80’s. During high school she was involved in the synchronized swim team and gymnastics. As a girl, she had to take a high school cooking and sewing class, which she did not like, and was jealous of the boys who got to take shop and use carpentry tools.

Honey married her high school sweetheart, Edward Schmidt, shortly before he was drafted and served in the army in the South Pacific during WW II. After the war they lived and raised their children, Sandra and Thomas, in Brookfield, Wisconsin. She was a Girl Scout leader and very active in their school events. She loved volunteering in her community and spent many years doing volunteer work at Luther Manor, a graduated assisted living facility in the Milwaukee area, and she especially enjoyed all church activities. Summer vacations and eventually an acreage purchase in northern Wisconsin resulted in times spent hiking, berry picking, fishing, swimming, sailing, and playing cards and board games with her family, parents and other friends and relatives. In 1984, she and her husband moved to April Sound in Conroe to live closer to her son and his family. Church activities became a major focus as she was the moving force behind various church skits, pageants, and performances. She found great pleasure in doing things for and with the children. She led the effort to create a live nativity at church including props, costumed actors, and live animals to share the story of our Lord’s birth at Bethlehem with the community. This is where she earned another title, “The General.” When she said jump, the only response acceptable was, “how high and what do you want me to do when I am up there.” She loved vacationing and travelling throughout our country and many international places with her husband. Later in life she got into cruising with her son, his wife, and several people from church. Her favorite trip was cruising the inside passage of Alaska with a side trip through Denali State Park with its abundant animal life and magnificent panoramic views.

Nana was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Edward Schmidt, daughter Sandy Patterson, sisters Leora Nelson and Bernice Zindler, brother Robert Goehlen, and many loved family members and friends. She is survived by her son Thomas Schmidt and daughter-in-love Barbara Schmidt, grandchildren, Gary Patterson and wife Diana, Tammy Schmidt, Jennifer Nye and husband John, six Great Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great Grandchildren, niece Elaine Roubik and numerous Great and Great-Great Nieces, Nephews and many dear friends from Wisconsin and Texas, especially at her home church of Living Savior Lutheran in Montgomery.
