Dennis Wayne Marple, 69, passed away on September 19, 2018. Within a short 15 months, ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) took away his healthy, fit body and his life.
Dennis was born on February 7, 1949 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Raymond and Lucile (Walker) Marple. He grew up on a small, family farm in Martinsville, Indiana and was active in FFA before working his way through Purdue University. He graduated from Purdue with a B.S. Industrial Management in 1971. He moved to Houston with Shell Oil in 1972 and became a Texan. He enjoyed the Texas culture, the people and the hot weather.
Dennis had a very strong work ethic. He enjoyed a long, successful career in the downstream sector of the oil industry. He held managerial and executive positions with Shell Oil, LaGloria Oil & Gas/Texas Eastern and Crown Central Petroleum Company. Dennis joined Calumet Specialty Products in 2004 as a consultant and then contractor assuming managerial responsibility for product sales and supply for the Shreveport refinery. After working since he was a child, he finally retired as of January 2017.
Dennis is survived by his wife of 28 years, Roberta. In 2003, they moved from Houston to his beloved home on Lake Conroe. Dennis is also survived by his sisters, Margaret (Loren) Hannum and Linda Strickland, Morgantown, Indiana; brother Tom (Martha) Marple, Bend, Oregon; brother-in-law, Bob (Carol) Fay, Leicester, NC. and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
When not working, Dennis enjoyed running, hiking, fitness, music, playing his guitars, reading, gardening, nature, animals and sometimes...golf! He appreciated the simple things in life and was happiest outdoors communing with nature while spending time with his devoted pets. Dennis was a kind, patient, honest, easygoing, non-judgmental man, husband, brother, brother-in-law, friend, boss and co-worker. In all respects, he was a really good guy.
Special thanks to VITAS Hospice and personal caregivers Nikki, Cammie, Yolanda, Sarita, Lulu, Melissa and Susie for their devotion and care of both Dennis and Roberta.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at The Walden Yacht Club, Montgomery, Texas, on Sunday, October 21 at 3:00 PM. In keeping with Dennis's "style", dress is casual and comfortable.
If the time might be right for you, Dennis would love for you to plant a tree or adopt a pet in his memory. Should you desire, donations may be sent to Houston Methodist Hospital Foundation, MEMO - ALS RESEARCH/DENNIS MARPLE or to an animal welfare charity of choice.
