Charles A. “Hickey” Womack, age 74, passed away on September 24, 2021 at his home in Houston. He was born on August 14, 1947 in Houston to Huland Ellison and Eula Mae Womack.
Charlie grew up in a house full of firefighters, so naturally he fell in line and began his duties well before he was of legal age to be truly considered a firefighter. When he was 13, Charles became one of the youngest people to ever earn the Bureau of Mines and Red Cross First Aid Card. He couldn’t see sixteen quick enough, when he did, he became an official “Junior Firefighter” with the Northwest Volunteer Fire Department, a Department to which his entire family at one point or another dedicated their time and efforts.
In 1972, Charlie went to work as a paid Firefighter for Spring Branch but he continued to volunteer his time at NWVFD as well. He later left Spring Branch and went to The Woodlands in 1976, where he proudly served his community, made the ranks of Lieutenant and watched the area and the department grow. In 1986, Charlie left The Woodlands and became part of the dispatch crew with Conroe FD, he eventually made his way back to the trucks and found himself in the position of a Lieutenant for Conroe as well. He retired from Conroe in 2007; however, that didn’t keep him away from what he loved most as he still volunteered with Aldine.
He was a longtime member and past President of the International Fire Buff Associates. He loved to travel and attended many of their conventions. He also enjoyed playing golf and softball.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Molly Womack; mother and father; his brothers, Huland “Gene” Womack, Thomas “Pud” Womack, James Womack and Donald Womack; niece, Dawna Womack; and various other family and friends. He is survived by his brother, Richard Womack; niece, Kay Vavrina and husband James; nephew, Darren Womack and numerous other family and friends.
