On March 11, 2025, our beloved mother, Barbara Ann Blocker, was called home to be with the Lord.
Barbara was the only daughter of George and Beulah (Shug) Gay of Lexington, Texas, born April 19, 1939. She grew up on the prairie around Lexington and the family moved into town when she was a teenager.
She was a high school volleyball player and was a member of the drum corp. After graduating from Lexington High School, Barbara moved to Austin to attend business school. On March 18, 1957, she went on a blind double date with a young airman stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base. It was close enough to love at first sight - the two were engaged within six weeks and married in November of that year.
Fernie “Frank” Blocker was a career military man, and Barbara became a military wife. Shortly after their wedding, the young couple moved to Orlando, Florida. They welcomed their first daughter the following year. Barbara and daughter Lexa returned to Lexington and lived with her parents while Frank: was stationed overseas. Following his return from Iceland, the family moved to Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas. Their son, Craig, and second daughter, Laurel, were born there.
Over the next few years, the family was stationed in Hawaii and Missouri. When Frank was sent to Thailand during the Vietnam War, Barbara and the kids moved to Houston to be near her brothers' families. Once Frank was home, the family moved a few more times, living in Louisiana, South Dakota, and two other bases in Texas, before he retired in 1978. Appropriately so, Barbara was also recognized during Frank’s retirement ceremony for her service as a USAF spouse.
The family settled in the Houston area, living in Channelview and later in Porter. Barbara was proud of her Texas heritage and thought a field of bluebonnets with a spattering of Indian paintbrushes was one of the most beautiful sights. At the times Frank: was stationed away, Barbara had to be a single mom, not a common dynamic in those days. One especially challenging time was dealing with a child in the hospital fighting for her life while Frank was at war. Barbara didn't have the luxury we enjoy today of being able to call anywhere in the world at any time and was unable to tell Frank what was happening at home. Barbara and Frank raised their children in a happy and loving home to be thoughtful adults. They rejoiced at the birth of their only grandchild, Ashley, in 1985. She remains her Mammaw's joy.
Barbara was a lifelong Baptist, and her last membership was at Mims Baptist Church in Conroe. She now rests in the arms of the Savior, free from pain and sorrow, rejoicing in the presence of the Almighty. Barbara joins Frank, her beloved husband of 56 years, her parents, her brother Harold "Sonny" and wife Gene Spears, and brother Glen and wife Maxine Gay in heaven. She is survived by her daughter Lexa Blocker, son Craig Blocker and daughter Laurel and husband James Lambert, as well as her only granddaughter Ashley Blocker and David Galvan, and two great granddaughters, Frankie and Dannie Galvan. She is also remembered with love by brothers-in-law Joe Blocker and Jesse Blocker, and sisters-in law Thelma and husband Ronnie Stone, Velma Beck, Ruthie Blocker, and Betty Tucker, plus many loving family members and friends. While we grieve her passing, we find solace in the hope of Christ's resurrection and the assurance that we will one day be reunited in God's eternal kingdom.
"Well done, good and faithful servant." -Matthew 25:23
