November 28, 1942 - October 27, 2020
Stephen Wayne Howard of Montgomery, Texas died on October 27, 2020 at the age of 77. Stephen was a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather. Steve was born on November 28th, 1942 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Merritt and Vivian Howard. He went to Osseo Senior High School, where he was the Co-Captain of the Hockey team and played football, baseball and track. He was also a member of the National Honors Society, Choir, and the Creative Writing Club. Steve graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He married Carolyn Anne Nelson on September 23, 1967. In 1972 they moved to Houston, Texas and he began his career with Toshiba. After working for Toshiba for 27 years, he retired early, only to take on another job with Zollern, where he worked for 10 years before retiring again. He then became a consultant with Toshiba, working with many of his previous coworkers. As a youth, Steve was an avid outdoorsman, spending countless hours fishing and canoeing in the boundary waters between Minnesota and Canada with his father, brother Joe, and uncle Stan. Steve continued his love of the outdoors throughout his life. You could often find him outside in his garage or in the yard building something. As a father, he was involved in his children’s activities such as: Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, band, dance, martial arts, and backpacking. He went as far as building his son a skateboard ramp for the backyard and converted half of his garage into a dance studio for his daughter. In his later years, he loved sitting outside watching his son build boats and spending time with his three Grandchildren, who made his eyes light up like Christmas every time he saw them. Steve was a loving and caring husband for 53 years. Carolyn describes him as her soulmate and her best friend. Carolyn and Steve enjoyed long Sunday drives with no destination and did this throughout their entire marriage. They also loved dining out and exploring new restaurants. Steve and Carolyn would often sit together on their porch in Montgomery Texas enjoying the trees and nature surrounding them. There are very few things Steve wouldn’t do in order to show his best friend how much he loved her. Steve had an incredible work ethic, and was devoted to his profession, his co-workers, and his peers. He was a mentor to many, and well-respected by all. When talking to his co-workers, phrases like “he is such as great man,” “he is so smart,” and “what a kind man” were common remarks about him. Steve is survived by his wife, Carolyn Howard, his oldest daughter Lynn Greenwood (and husband John Greenwood), His twins, Paul Howard, and Julie Nelson (and husband John Nelson and grandchildren Avery, Sarah, and Katie Nelson), his brother Joe Howard (and wife Pat Howard) and close cousins Richard Maas (and wife Patricia), David Andersen (and wife Jeanie), Sandra Andersen, Dennis Maas (and wife Sharyn), Anita Edling, Bryan Maas, Rozanne Andersen (and Husband Steve). He is also survived by his family at Toshiba, too numerous to name. Due to Covid-19, there will be no service at this time. When it is safe to do so, there will be a celebration of Steve to be announced at a later time.
