Robert David Garrett, known by his friends and family as Bobby or Bob, was born on December 8, 1948 in Dallas, Texas to David Eugene Garrett and Jeanette Sewell Garrett. He spent his early years in Dallas, and around the age of 8 he moved to Dayton, Texas, where he continued his schooling and graduated from Dayton High School in 1967. He then attended Baylor University for two years before attending and graduating from Stephen F. Austin University.
Bob was an only child, so he treasured his friends and his cousins. He would often spend summers in Mexia with his grandparents or at camp in East Texas with his cousins. He loved playing baseball, fast cars, and being outdoors. He had many jobs growing up and loved talking about them in his later years.
Bob returned to Dallas after college, worked in the trucking industry for awhile, enjoyed playing fast-pitch softball, and began raising his family. As his parents grew older, he moved his family back to Dayton and he lived there until 2014. He went to work offshore for Mobil Oil, attended Calvary Baptist Church, made numerous friends and remained close with them the rest of his life. Upon his retirement from Mobil, he got his massage therapist license and began a job he truly enjoyed. He loved working on athletes, helping students, businessmen, housewives, teachers, and friends with their aches and pains or recovery from a surgery. Long after he stopped doing massage therapy, he received calls from former clients asking for his expert help. He loved those phone calls.
In early 2015, Bob met Carol and it was love at first sight. They married in May of 2016 and had a wonderful life together. They grew together in their relationship with Christ Jesus, their understanding of God's Word, and their love for each other and their families and friends. They often talked of the blessings they received daily and how grateful they were to have found each other, even late in life.
Bob's love of baseball carried over into his adulthood, and he and Carol rarely missed watching the Astros and cheering on their favorite team. He enjoyed coaching from his recliner and often let the umpires or managers know when they were in error. He listened to country music, relished time outdoors watching the lake, a river, wildlife, or God's creation with friends, and he enjoyed grilling and barbecuing. He was humble, kind, and compassionate, and he tried to live his life by God's Word.
Bob was a Baptist his whole life, but he would rather tell you he was a Christ-follower, and he could tell you the difference. He enjoyed a close relationship with Jesus, especially in the last 10 years of his life. He could be found every morning reading his Bible in his quiet
time.
Bob Garrett was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and some of his aunts and uncles. He is survived by his wife, Carol Yeakley Garrett of Conroe, children Stephanie Welder (Duncan) of Galveston, Kyle Garrett (Tyna) of Livingston, Steven White (Kelli) of Spring, Susan White of Conroe, and Kyle Sheehan (Madi) of Austin. He also leaves behind many grandchildren, his Uncle Glenn Sewell (Linda) of Coppell, his closest friend, Wayne Mormon of Greenville, Texas, and some cousins he treasured. There are many friends he also considered his family, and he valued their friendship until the very end of his life.
Bob was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Dayton. After he met Carol, they attended Crosby Church-Huffman Campus where they were married, and later became members of Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Spring, where their membership is today.
The Celebration of Bob's Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 25, 2024 at Oak Ridge Baptist Church, 500 E Oak Hill Dr, Spring, Texas. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the building fund at Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Bob's name.
